Elimination

Glue traps with aggregation pheromones for cockroaches are an excellent way to confirm the identification of the parasite.

If you are struggling with a cockroach problem, we strongly advise you to visit an expert in pest management. This advice is all the more important when it comes to a multi-residential building because cockroaches can move easily from one apartment to another.

Actions

  • Use baited glue traps
  • Ideally, request assistance from one of our pest management experts

Prevention

  • Check new food containers as soon as you return from the store
  • Remove cardboard food-carrying boxes from the house
  • Seal up cracks in kitchen cupboards

Description and development

The most common cockroach in Eastern Canada, the German Cockroach grows to 13 mm long and has long, thin, flexible antennae. Its body is brown with two dark streaks running down its thorax. The adults have wings but only use them for gliding.
The female cockroach deposits 8 to 48 eggs in an egg case fixed to the end of her abdomen. She carries them some 28 days and then hides them in a crack or attaches them to a wall or ceiling. The young cockroaches hatch the following day. A female may live as long as six months, thus leaving some 20,000 to 30,000 descendants by the end of one year.

Habits

Cockroaches avoid bright light and are primarily active at night. They eat the same food as man, tainting the food with their excrements, and spread an unpleasant odor from secretions that flow from their mouths. Once a plate or dish has been sullied by cockroaches, the taste of hot food may be altered. Cockroaches are known vectors of diseases.

Tips

Keeping your home clean is the best method for preventing cockroach infestation. If they can’t find the food and moisture they need, they will have trouble setting up house in your home. Pay particular attention to the cleanliness of your kitchen and bathrooms, as these are the most vulnerable rooms in your house. Check food containers as you bring them into your home to ensure they are not contaminated. Also seal cracks in your kitchen cabinets to facilitate cleaning and possible treatment should you later find evidence of these pests.
